Effective treatment for Chronic Pelvic Pain
This widespread condition is often referred to as CPPS rather than its full title of Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome. With CPPS, pain is usually felt in the lower part of your stomach and sometimes between your hips. If the pain is sudden and intense, but you’ve had it for less than six months, the diagnosis will probably be ‘Acute Pelvic Pain’. If the symptoms are present for more than six months, they are classified as Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome. Symptoms are usually most intense when you are active.
Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome
CPPS is more common in women than men. Typical causes are period pain, ovarian cysts and endometriosis. Some pregnancies can also bring on symptoms. One in six women has suffered from CPPS at some stage, whereas one in ten men has suffered from it.
Many of the men we treat for CPPS have another underlying condition, such as Prostatitis. Patients frequently say passing urine takes longer and is painful. Pain can also be experienced during sex. In such cases, Focused Shockwave Therapy has high success rates in relieving and often eliminating symptoms.
The symptoms of CPPS may include the following:
- A sudden sharp, stabbing or burning pain
- A dull ache or feeling the pelvic area is pressurised
- A twisted or knotted sensation in the pelvic region
- A cramping or throbbing pain in the pelvic region
The causes of CPPS are not officially established, however:
- Prostatitis
- Period pain
- Ovarian Cysts
- Endometriosis
- Irritation of the prostate
- Muscle Spasm in the pelvic floor
- Infections in the bowel or bladder or a UTI or STI
- Pain in the area between the rectum and testicles
- High levels of stress, anxiety and depression
- Two main conditions which contribute to Chronic Pelvic Pain are chronic fatigue syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome
- CPPS is associated with IBS, and linked to bowel problems, leading to bloating or diarrhoea, including chronic fatigue syndrome
- CPPS has not so far been associated with sexually transmitted infection
- The symptoms of CPPS may be different for individual men
